"I have had multiple occupational and physical therapists recommend Great Play because they have seen tremendous results in children participating in our program."

Interview with Marie Maxwell

Marie franchised Great Play in Redmond, WA in 2008.

Q. What got you interested in the kids' gym business?
A. Twenty years ago, when we were children, we played outside and rode our bikes around the neighborhood until sundown without adult supervision. Today, however, it’s no longer safe for children to play outside without adult supervision for a variety of reasons. As a result, children spend more time indoors watching TV and playing video games. This loss of physical activity has had a significant negative impact on children, which ultimately led me to finding a business that provides an enriching and fun environment for children to be physically active.

Q. What made you pick Great Play in particular to franchise over other alternatives in the category?
A. The three key reasons that I selected Great Play were because of the sports skill program emphasis, the curriculum in general, and the Interactive Arena. Playing sports is something a person can do from youth through adulthood. You never outgrow playing basketball, soccer, etc. Teaching kids sports skills and building their confidence will help them become and stay active and provide many other lifelong benefits. The class curriculum is based on the most current scientific findings, which ensures that we are providing the best possible program that will produce great results. I have had multiple occupational and physical therapists recommend Great Play because they have seen tremendous results in children participating in our program. The Interactive Arena is unique to Great Play and the parents and kids love it. The technology is used to coach the kids and they just love the interactive games. They have so much fun that they don’t realize we are helping them build important motor and sports skills.

Q. What made you want to franchise a business in general (as opposed to just doing it on your own for instance; and as opposed to just getting a corporate job)?

A. I worked for large corporations for many years and decided that I really wanted to open my own business. Initially I considered starting a business from scratch, but it would have taken years of research (and expense) to develop an innovative program. I wanted to move quickly and I wanted a high level of confidence that it would be successful, which is why I started considering a franchise. Great Play has already conducted the research and designed a very turnkey program. They have proven track record with success in their initial markets.

Q. Anything else?

A. The training from Great Play was amazing. The coaches learn all aspects of running classes and birthday parties, providing a safe, clean and fun environment, opening and closing the gym, and how to engage with customers. The investment of time is well worth it. From Day 1, all of the classes and parties were perfectly orchestrated and customers were amazed with our delivery of the program.
